Capture the magic of foxgloves in a relaxed, expressive way.
Beautiful paintings happen when you stop trying so hard. The naturally graceful forms of foxgloves reward loose, confident brushwork.
So let's
skip the pressure of botanical illustration and let these towering beauties star in joyfully loose watercolour gardens that sing with colour and life.
Through a confidence-building sketchbook project using watercolour pencils, expressive wet-on-wet techniques, and vibrant garden compositions, you'll learn how to capture the essence of these enchanting spires without getting tangled up in botanical accuracy.
By the end, you’ll feel more confident sketching flowers, embracing happy accidents to let watercolour do what it does best, and ready to paint foxgloves that feel alive, colourful, and joyfully imperfect.
If you’ve dabbled a little in watercolour and want to loosen up, embrace flow, and let foxgloves guide your brush, this course is for you!
These stately flowers can feel intimidating to draw and paint!
But we will start with a playful pencil-and-water exercise that makes foxgloves less intimidating.
This gentle start helps you understand their structure and build confidence before moving to full paintings.
Learn how to break foxgloves down into simple, flowing forms.
By focusing on big shapes, gestural forms and light and dark values, you’ll discover how to create flowers that feel dimensional and alive without overworking.
In fact, we will let the brush do most of the work!
We'll paint together, step by step to create two different paintings. Aside from the video you'll also have the line drawings and references so that you are guided all the way.
But there is no need to stop there!
Armed with these new techniques AND a library of carefully selected reference images, you'll be itching to create a whole series of your own foxglove paintings.
Painting foxgloves doesn’t have to mean painstaking detail or precise botanical studies!
This course begins with a sketchbook project using watercolour pencils, where you’ll explore the structure of the flower and discover how light and dark values give it form.
Next, we’ll dive into a playful study of multiple foxgloves in different colours — a quick, flexible project that encourages experimentation.
Finally, we’ll bring it all together in a vibrant garden scene, with foxgloves as the star surrounded by a riot of other loose, expressive blooms.
By the end, you’ll have a clear understanding of how to simplify complex flowers, a set of paintings to be proud of, and the confidence to let your watercolours bloom with colour and freedom.

I always recommend that you use what you already have. There is no need to use exactly the same supplies or colours as I am using.
I always include details of exactly what I use in each lesson but the broad basics include:
If you purchase the Standalone Edition of Foxgloves in Watercolour you will have instant and ongoing access to the materials.
If you purchase the membership you will have instant access to not only the Foxgloves in Watercolour class but also to the entire growing library of Happy Painters Hub courses. Your access to all of these courses will continue for as long as you choose to pay your low monthly membership subscription.
If you subscribe to the membership, you will automatically be charged on a monthly basis. The membership fee is very low at the moment because the Hub is still relatively new. Over time, more and more content will be added so it is likely that the fee will increase in future enrolment periods.
However, when the subscription fee increases, existing members will continue to pay the low fee they originally signed up for.
That means you never have to worry about the subscription fee increasing for as long as you are a continuing member.
Don’t worry - that doesn’t mean you are stuck with me forever, cancelling or changing your billing details is easy. You can do it all yourself!
Just click on Your Account from your student dashboard and you can easily edit your credit card details or cancel your subscription with a couple of clicks.
